By of the Journal Sentinel The man who killed former New Berlin resident Eric Volp, whose body was found near a creek in northern Wisconsin about a year after he went missing in 2008, was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison. Erik M. Smith, 34, was a suspect from the start, because witnesses had seen him leaving an Iron Mountain, Mich., bar with Volp. Though authorities in Michigan and Wisconsin continued to investigate Volp's disappearance, and then suspicious death, it wasn't until a tipster came forward years later that investigators decided to charge Smith earlier this year.
